Chapter 13

“You know, we don’t have to go out on a date. I’d be just as happy here with you.” I said, watching as Andre soldiered through what was clearly an impressive cough to finish putting on his clothes. He’d woken up today with a stuffy nose, a cough, and if that flush was anything to go by, a fever was shortly on its way.

But any attempts I’d made so far to convince him to put this off had fallen on deaf ears. Case in point, he shook his head, pausing to grip it with a grimace.

“I know that, but I also know that you’ve never been taken out on a real date. Don’t worry, I’m not planning on bringing you to some swanky restaurant or anything. You don’t care for crowds, and I know that.”

A knot eased in my chest even as worry climbed. If he was sick then he shouldn’t be going out at all. What if we ran into someone who was immune compromised and he infected them?

“I appreciate that, but should you really be going out while contagious?” I asked and he nodded.

“It’ll be fine, what I have planned involves no one else but us and we’ll be away from town a good bit.”

At that, my curiosity perked. “I take it I don’t get any more hints other than that?”

He shook his head, amusement clear. “No, now come on. You can worry about my health after we get back from our date.”

I took his offered arm, letting him lead the way despite my misgivings. He helped me into his car and in the rearview mirror I caught the basket sitting in the back. A hunch began to form, and when he saw me looking he huffed.

“You make planning surprises for you very difficult, I’ll have you know.”

I chuckled, looking forward and pretending I didn’t see it. “I don’t know anything, just a guess. Besides, whether it’s a surprise or not, I’ll love it either way.”

Considering that was clearly a picnic basket and he’d said we were going away from people, it didn’t take a brain surgeon to figure it out. Dinner under the stars sounded gorgeous, and wherever he took us, it would be perfect.

He grumbled, but nodded. “I’m glad, but I’m still going to try to surprise you next time.”

I didn’t bother responding, instead watching as the road disappeared. When it faded into a dirt path leading into what looked like a wooded area, I raised a brow.

“If you were anyone else, I’d be worried you were taking me here to kill me.” I teased and he flushed, looking again at our surroundings with uncertainty.

“To be honest, I didn’t consider that. Do you want to do it somewhere else?”

Before he could start to worry himself into a stupor, I caught his hand and kissed it. “No, it’s fine. I’m safe with you, remember?”

The worry faded and he smiled, nodding. “Right.” He didn’t take his hand back, letting it rest on the gear shift between us as he kept driving down the narrow road.
